Uyuni Salt Pans
Pachatusantrek’s tour begins in Uyuni and covers all of the ground around the Bolivian Salt Pans over three full days.
The Salar de Uyuni, located in the Andes of southwestern Bolivia, is the world's largest salt flat. It is the legacy of a prehistoric lake that dried up, leaving behind a desert spanning nearly 11,000 square kilometers—a landscape of brilliant white salt, rock formations, and cactus-covered islands. Its otherworldly expanse can be admired from the center of Incahuasi Island. Although wildlife is scarce in this unique ecosystem, it is home to many pink flamingos.
This tour takes you across the salt flats over three days, showcasing all the equally fascinating and stunning sights in the surrounding area. A tour guide will accompany you throughout the journey to provide explanations at every location you visit. Please check our "detailed itinerary" page for specific details.
Your adventure step by step
A day that’s out of this world!
After pickup from Joya Andina Airport, we visit Colchani. Here, we will tour a facility where locals process and package salt for human consumption. We will also visit a small market selling salt-based handicrafts.
Upon entering the Uyuni Salt Flats, we will visit a site where locals harvest the salt to be processed at the plants we saw in Colchani.
During the tour, we will discover why the "Ojos del Salar" (Salt Flat Eyes/springs) appear to be constantly boiling. As we venture deeper into the flats, we will have the chance to take unique photos where perspective becomes a mere theory.
We will visit Incahuasi Island, home to giant cacti that create a truly unique landscape. We will enjoy a delicious lunch right in the middle of the salt flats.
Afterwards, we will travel by vehicle to the northern edge of the Uyuni Salt Flats—specifically to Coquesa—to enjoy unparalleled views of the landscape. We will take a short hike up a hillside leading to the entrance of the Coquesa Mummies Cave. To end the day, we will witness an unforgettable sunset, watching the sky turn shades of red and violet as night falls.
Dinner and overnight stay at the Palacio de Sal (Salt Palace) hotel; standard double room.
Meals: Lunch and dinner
After breakfast at the hotel, we visit the Train Cemetery, home to old locomotives and railcars used in the late 19th century. This site was once a maintenance depot for railway machinery. The trains now rest on a flat, secluded expanse where the wind is their constant companion, making the site an iconic landmark of the city of Uyuni.
We continue our journey via San Cristóbal to reach Laguna Negra and Laguna Hedionda, passing through small Andean villages and the Valley of the Rocks along the way.
We arrive at Laguna Hedionda, notable for its distinctive inhabitants: flamingos that parade along the shoreline alongside smaller birds.
We enjoy a delicious lunch en route. Afterward, we continue through the vast Catal Valley—an off-the-beaten-path area featuring magnificent scenery.
We proceed to Villamar.
Dinner and overnight stay at Mallku Cueva in Villamar (standard double room).
Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner.
Breakfast and departure from the Mallku Cueva Hotel.
En route, we will reach the western side of Laguna Colorada, the primary nesting site for three species of South American flamingos.
We will visit the Sol de Mañana fumaroles to see the earth bubbling and steaming, then continue to Laguna de Chalviri, where you may choose to bathe in the region's thermal waters.
We will drive across the Dalí Desert to Laguna Blanca and then arrive at Laguna Verde, where the turquoise-green waters blend into a surreal landscape.
We will enjoy a delicious lunch en route.
The tour concludes in San Pedro de Atacama, or we return to the Uyuni airport for your departure.
