Rainbow Mountain
This is a 6-Day trek in the Vilcanota Cordillera, on a route we call the “Camino del Apu Ausangate” in proximity of the highest Mountain in Cusco.
This sacred mountain is located to the south east of the city of Cuzco, capital of the Inca Empire.
The trek will push us to our physical limits. A high altitude trek, we will cross mountain passes over 5,000 meters above sea level, and our campsites will be at an altitude of over 4,300 meters. The terrain is muddy and rocky.
This trek offers spectacular and beautiful views of the puna region, where the glaciers surround us in all directions. We will walk on the shores of lakes, and Andean cameloids will accompany us on parts of our journey.
Your adventure step by step
We will start early in the morning going south west from the city, towards Upis located at the foot of the Ausangate Mountain
After breakfast at the foot of the mountain we will start trecking going towards our first challenge The Arapa Mountain pass. It is a long opening in the mountain that will lead us to an environment where vicunas pasture and live. Vicunas are also South American camelids.
We will start our descent into the highland typical environment. We shall pass water mirror lagoons and imposing mountains to reach our camp site to have lunch and explore the lagoons before going to bed.
After breakfast we will take the road towards which is a short trek near 5 thousand meters above sea level to enjoy the view of the lagoons and the Ausangate Mountain.
Our descent will take us to the Antapata plainlands surrounded by snow mountain peaks. We will camp, have lunch and rest. Overnight.
Our excursion will begin early to reach the famous color Mountain. This excursion will involve all day and have lunch on the way. Back at the camp site we will have dinner and rest.
We will leave the campsite after breakfast to go to the highland Ausangatecocha highland lagoon where we will have lunch.
Afterwards we will cross the Palomani Jasa highland pass and its spectacular lookout point of the Vilcanota Mountain range.
We will take the way back to the camp site in Chilca Phinaya where we will observe the Llama and alpaca herds.
On this day we will trek in the Hatunpampa highland plains.
Later we will go up to the Qampa highland pass, last challenge of our trek. We will enjoy spectacular views of the snow-peaked mountains
On the way down we will enjoy the view of the color mountains reaching the camp site in Nina Parayoq have dinner and spend the night.
Our last trekking day will take us past the mythical and sacrad Otorongococha lagoon.
It is place full of mystery and beauty. After a short trek we will arrive at Pacchanta a shepherd community of alpacas.
We will have our lunch and enjoy the hot springs to later return to Cusco.
