OVERVIEW

Salar de Uyuni, located in the Andes in southwest Bolivia, is the world’s largest salt flat. It’s the legacy of a prehistoric lake that went dry, leaving behind a desertlike, nearly 11,000-sq.-km. landscape of bright-white salt, rock formations and cacti-studded islands. Its otherworldly expanse can be observed from central Incahuasi Island. Though wildlife is rare in this unique ecosystem, it harbors many pink flamingos.

This tour takes you through the Salt Flats over three days and shows you all of the surrounding sights that are equally fascinating and amazing. A tour guide will be with you at all times to explain everything and everywhere that you will go and see. Please see our ‘detailed itinerary’ page for specific details.

ITINERARY

This tour will first begin in Uyuni Salt Pans. You will be picked up from your hotel and depart for Colchani. This is a very small town with a small population. The local’s process salt and iodine here and you will be able to see how the salt is made. We will then visit a small market where handcrafts are made entirely of salt. Enter the magnificent Salt Flats, see the way local people gather salt for processing it. We then continue through the Salt Flats and discover the reasons for the flats boiling.

After this, we will drive out into the Salt Flats where you will have a unique photo opportunity in the great plain of Salt. We will stay here for a while for you to soak in the vast desert.

Once we are driving out of the desert, we will go towards the Incahuasi Island. This is a large island in the middle of the dessert where gigantic cacti grow, making the landscape even more unique. When we arrive, we will walk along the coral path and then enjoy lunch on the island.

When we have finished lunch, we will drive to the southern shore of the Uyuni Salt Flats, to the Galaxy Cave. It has this name because of its resemblance to an out of earth site. This is an underwater cave of remote times and next to it, is the Devil’s Cave, and ancient cemetery of pre Incan cultures, the Lípez, that lived in the area. We will learn about how these places were discovered and the legends and traditions of the locals.

To finish off the day, we continue to the village of San Pedro de Quemez, where you can walk on the small Andean town and visit the ruins of the old burnt town.
